City Streets

Walking these city streets,
as the rain falls.
The smell of dampness and filth,
are embedded in my nostrils.

My eyes down watching my feet,
the streams of water carrying trash,
and other I can't say.

In the corners of the dark,
there moves a shadow.
Its a human form laying in a puddle.

A rat scurries across the way, and I shiver,
Nausea is creeping up in my crawl,
and I walk a little faster.

These city streets are a scary place,
even during the day.
When night falls,
scared is not even the right word to say.

I finally reach my door,
and slide my key in.
My cat it greets me, with my dog.
I shed my wet skin.
I grab a cup of something hot and flip the TV on.

The news says a man died in a puddle all alone.
Found among the filth and rain.
Rats crawling all around.
A soul that suffered in these streets.
Now leaves homeward bound
.

Shades of Gray Reviews

Greg Walker

'Shades of Gray' is a thought provocating collection of poetry that makes you think into the subject matter of each poem written. Some how and some place not too far away we can relate and have been confronted at a place or time or experienced before in life maybe sometimes speechless or not knowing what to think but 'Shades of Gray' verbalizing this in it's own way.

One glance inside 'Shades of Grey In Small Town Ohio' and you realize that Ms. Florea is an extraordinary poet.  This doyen of insight and intensity will at once astound you with piercing emotional acuity and sincerity in poems like 'Faded Life' and 'From Birth to Earth' and delight you with little gems like 'Racing in the Dirt' and 'Thunder's Roar'.  Ms.Florea approaches love, life and loss with a passion born of deep intuitive wisdom and candid self-examination.    This heartwarming slice of a woman's deepest dreams, thoughts and experiences is filled from cover to cover with real treasures you will want to read out loud.   A poem like 'What is a Real Woman?' launches the reader into their own journey with gender stereotypes and is definite food for thought, while 'November Haunt' took me back to my own loves won and lost.    'One Race' highlights the tragedy on September 11th and should be read by all Americans no matter what your feelings are about the events of that fateful day.  Ms. Florea's patriotism deserves to be emulated.    This is not a pretentious book of poetry.  The words you will find on these pages are normal and down to earth and that is what makes it such a refereshing departure from the sometimes heavy and overbearing work of many authors today.  Her work doesn't lack passion and power, however, and despite it's grace or rather because of it,  it will reach in and extract from you many long-hidden secrets.   One thing you can't do with this book is put it on a shelf and forget about it.  It begs to be read over and over again, if only to see how your own feelings evolve along with Ms. Florea's words.  This book is a catalyst for analyzing your own life and looking deep within.   I strongly recommend giving this book a real chance to feed and nourish those aspects of yourself that often remain cloaked in surreptitious denial.  Bonnie Kay Florea truly is 'everywoman' and Shades of Gray In Small Town Ohio should be read by all who want to gain deeper insight into their human experience. The beauty of this little book truly is in the details.  Get more than one copy, you will want to share it!

Truly Free.
When color is no longer an issue.
When looks are no longer the thing.
When how much you weigh, is of no matter.
We will all finally be free.
When love is the key, and hate is banished.
When the heart will bond with our soul.
Life as we know it.
We can then let go.
Look with your heart, see with your soul.
That is where we will find.
The freedom we all so long for.
We all then will truly be free.
Walk away from violence.
Step back from predigest judgments.
See what your faults are,
 before pointing out another's.
Then we will all truly be free
